The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
